The Luxury List: British Motors

It’s undeniable that one of the first things that come to mind when you mention the word “luxury” is cars. That’s why for my first blog post, I decided to feature one of the most prominent dealerships in San Francisco… British Motors. Headquartered on Van Ness at the corner of O’Farrell, the showrooms boast of luxury brands including Lamborghini, Bentley and Jaguar, to name a few.

Greeted with excellent customer service, impeccable finishes, amazing architecture and of course, the showroom car models, I was ready for the interview. At the top of the curved marble staircase leading to a waiting area that is fully equipped with leather seating, refreshments and reading materials such as Haute Time- I realized the amount of detail put into this business to cater to the luxury market. It’s amazing and it works.

I had the pleasure of meeting Andrea Lodigiani. She was very professional and charmingly accommodating. She answered all the questions with utmost ease and candor- perfect for her position as the Marketing Manager of BMCD. Here are a few excerpts.

DCC: Tell us a little bit about the dealership.

AL: British Motors is a family owned-business founded by Kjell Qvale. Qvale started in the automobile industry selling Willys Jeeps prior to becoming one of the pioneers of importing foreign cars to the US. First to import MG Sports Cars in 1947, he added brand such as Lotus, Bentley, Jaguar, De Tomaso, Maserati and Rolls-Royce to his portfolio, later on.

DCC: Do you think that it’s strategic- having the SF headquarters in Cathedral Hill?

AL: No. Specifically designed to function as an automobile dealership, our showroom is an iconic structure, it’s a landmark. It was designed by famous architect Bernard Maybeck whose works include the domed Palace of Fine Arts and the First Church of Christ, Scientist in Berkeley.

DCC: What kind of clientele can we expect around both showrooms on a random week day?

AL: With the brands that we carry, definitely the Upper Crust of SF, international entrepreneurs, car enthusiasts. The 1%-ers.

DCC: What do you think, overall, of the San Francisco luxury market?

AL: San Francisco always had luxury brands across the table. With the current tech market success and all the money coming in, there’s definitely room for boutique luxury – more customized and customizable.

DCC: What’s in store in the near future from British Motors Car Distributors?

AL: The launch of the Jag Coupe in May. The new Bentley. There’s also a new Range Rover designed more for the passenger and not the driver. We’re dubbing it “The Rolls-Royce of SUVs”. People can also check out our website or make an appointment to find out more.

DCC: What can your future luxury market clients expect from BMCD?

AL: A superior automotive buying and owning experience from start to finish.

DCC: Last question, do you have any favorite cars within the dealership?

AL: I like the Jags and the Land Rovers. The Range Rover Sport and the Bentley Convertible (Continental GT).
